The local community commonly spend their Sundays with their familys. The people of Jakarta generally enjoy exercising around the area of the National Monument (Monas). However, there was something different about Monas on Sunday (15 September 2013). Thousands of people visiting Monas held hands together encircling Jakarta's well-renowned symbol. Men and women, young and old, all crossed one hand over the other around the Monas perimeter. These were not only Jakarta citizens, but also people of ASEAN, amounting to about 4000 holding hands the ASEAN way in order to set a new world record.

This record-setting event was held by the junior diplomats (SEKDILU 37) of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These young diplomats enthusiastically brought the local community together for the holding hands event.

This effort was in commemoration of the 46th anniversary of ASEAN this year and was open to the public.

Yohanna Lumbanradja, the head of the committee said, "The event is conducted as an effort in socializing the ASEAN Community 2015 which will commence very soon." Selecting Monas as the location of the event hopes to introduce Jakarta as the capital city of ASEAN. "The ASEAN hand-holding has so far only been done by state heads after ASEAN summits. Therefore, we would like to socialize this unique way of holding hands. It is to raise the awareness of Jakarta citizens towards the existence of ASEAN."

The event was sponsored by the ASEAN Secretariat, the ASEAN foreign mission representative, the Directorate General for ASEAN Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PAM JAYA and the local government of the DKI Jakarta province. Representatives of ASEAN states attended the event, such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Lao PDR and Myanmar, along with the Deputy Secretary General for the ASEAN Community and Corporate Affairs, Dr. AKP Mochtan and the Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN for the ASEAN Economic Community.

Youths today are more inspired and innovative than ever.  With determination, desire and technology, their involvement in raising awareness about ASEAN is instrumental to move our young people closer to ASEAN Community 2015,” Mochtan said. “This initiative of the Indonesian junior diplomats is an excellent and fun way of reaching out to the youth and we are completely in support of this endeavor.”

They were very impressed with the initiative and enthusiasm for the event. Wimar Witoelar joined the people of Jakarta in demonstrating enthusiasm throughout the entire event.

The releasing of red and white balloons by Ambassador Hazairin Pohan and the Secretary of the Directorate General for ASEAN,  Rahmat Pramono, signified the setting of the longest ASEAN holding hands record in the world. The morning exercise, games and flashmob held prior to the holding hands were entertainment itself for the community. The lively atmosphere was made even more exciting with a performance from Leo Mokodompit (Leo AFI) accompanies by the Sekdilu 37 band. Afterwards, a lot of the people took personal photos of themselves doing the ASEAN hand-hold. Sekdilu 37's simple yet unique way of introducing ASEAN can be considered quite a success (PR/MA).
